Festival of Single Craft Racing This Weekend
Don’t forget this Saturday is the huge Lion Is Ocean Surfski Series Race. Sunday is the new Super Sprint Hoe Horo Race at Newcastle. The super ‘sprint’ format makes it perfect for those looking to do their first race or get back into it after a break. If you want to car pool, sign up and check out who else going on the Training Schedule webpage. If you want to use a club canoe please see Gav.

Want to have an absolute ripper of a race this weekend?
1. Check the weather. Look at the forecast and think about how it might influence conditions at the race location.

2. Have a plan. Think about who you will position yourself next to on the start line. Who do you want to pace with? When might you drop your Level 4 smart bombs?

3. What did I learn. After the race ask yourself now what did I learn today. If you can find one thing then you’ve had a good race. If you can find 2 or more then you’ve had a great race. If you share what you learnt with the others then you’ve had an absolute ripper!

Training

What should I be doing?
PWEP – Despina asks Fabio on a date. Fabio agrees but only because Ernesta has been playing hard to get and he thinks this will make her jealous. Fabio picks Despina up in his purple Monaro. She jumps in the car and as she puts on her seatbelt turns to Fabio and says, “hey this is just like doing our PWEP!”
“What do you mean?” says Fabio.
“Well, you know how we put our seatbelts on every time we get in car whether we think we’ll need them or not?” explained Despina.
“Yeeeeeah”
“Well that’s just the same as going through our PWEP safety routine before every training session. We always do it regardless if it looks like we’ll need it or not.”
“Oh yeah, so it is”
Despina continued, “Predicting when things will go wrong on the water is no easier than predicting a car accident so it’s good to know we’re prepared if they do. What’s more, wearing a seatbelt doesn’t detract from going for a drive to some remote make-out location just as PWEP doesn’t stop us having a great session.”
In that moment Fabio begins to see Despina in a different light. Maybe he was making a mistake after all by pursuing Ernesta and her hot tamale?

Base Building – After last week’s recovery week Pablo is back on the base building case by adding a further 15 minutes to his longest Level 2 session. He’s clocking up mileage and loving it.

Not-So-Free Speed – Carmela worked hard in last weeks speed session but sure felt great afterwards. This week she’s going to try some ‘builds’ to work on her top-end speed. That is, the speed required to catch a runner, pass another canoe, drop a smart bomb, etc. The speed build she is doing this week consists of two minutes at each of Level 2, 3, 4, and then all out maximum effort. Following that it is two minutes of complete rest before repeating it four more times. Pablo’s catches up with Carmela at DB training and they decide to do the session together.
